We recently collaborated with the social enterprise Stripped Raw to launch the YOU MATTER Box, a tangible means of support for those struggling with their mental health. From inception to execution, the process of bringing this impactful product to market has been characterized by challenges, collaborations, and significant learning opportunities. Let's explore the key lessons learned along the way.

First, What is a Social Enterprise?

A social enterprise is a business entity that operates with the primary goal of addressing social or environmental issues, alongside making profits.

Many nonprofits adopt social enterprise models as a means to generate revenue to support their social or environmental missions. These organizations may engage in activities such as selling products or services, running businesses, or investing in income-generating projects. The profits generated are typically reinvested into the organization to further its mission rather than distributed to shareholders.

The YOU MATTER Box exemplifies this model by raising awareness and providing resources for suicide prevention.

From Concept to Market: Important Considerations

The YOU MATTER Box is designed to be a tangible lifeline for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Here's a breakdown of the key considerations involved in bringing it to life:

  • Product Design: The box includes curated items like a water bottle, stress ball, journal, and access to digital resources via QR codes. These elements offer practical support and encouragement.
  • Scalability: The team opted for a fulfillment center to ensure efficient order processing even with increased demand.
  • Inventory Management: Sourcing products from various vendors and factoring in lead times were crucial aspects of maintaining stock.

Print-on-Demand vs. Upfront Inventory:

The video explores two options for creating social enterprise products:

  • Upfront Inventory: This model, like the YOU MATTER Box, requires a larger initial investment but allows for greater control over product quality and customization.
  • Print-on-Demand: This model minimizes upfront costs but limits customization options and relies on third-party fulfillment.

Unexpected Challenges: Fulfillment Costs

The YOU MATTER Box encountered higher-than-anticipated fulfillment costs due to factors like two-day shipping. This highlights the importance of thorough research when budgeting for social enterprise ventures.

Kickstarter as a Launchpad:

The video suggests utilizing platforms like Kickstarter to raise initial capital and gauge market interest before investing heavily in inventory. This approach can also generate valuable social proof.
